GENERAL INFORMATION

Amazonas region is in the north eastern part of Peru; it has some mountains, Peruvian yunga and it also includes the Amazonian jungle. It has a productive tourism potential due to the diversity of altitudes and ecosystems in the territory.

The Peruvian yungas, or the forest along the eastern slope of the Andes Mountains, are located throughout the Peruvian territory in a narrow stretch that goes from 800 to 3500 m.a.s.l. It crosses the departments of Amazonas, Cajamarca, Loreto, La Libertad, San Martin, Huánuco, Pasco, Junín, Ayacucho, Huancavelica, Cuzco, Apurimac, Ucayali, Madre de Dios and Puno. These forests are characterized by dense vegetation and a particularly humid climate. It usually has poor soils, susceptible to erosion; but it has a great biological diversity with many endemic species.

These types of forests have a high number of endemic bird species; among which these stand out:

Yellow – Scarfed Tanager (Iridosornis reinhardti)
Peruvian Wren (Peruvian Cynnycerthia)
Rusty- Tinged Antpitta (Grallaria przewalskii)
Pale- Billed Antpitta (Grallaria carrikeri)
Russet- Mantled Softtail ( Thripophaga berlepschi)

CLIMATE AND WEATHER

Temperature varies according to the altitude. For altitudes above 2500 meters above sea level, the average temperature is between 6 and 12ºC (in the north) and between 8 and 22ºC (in the south). Below 2500 m.a.s.l. the average annual temperature is 25 ° C.

  • It is dry and cold at altitudes above 3 000 m. at the south of the department.
  • It is cold and cloudy in the South-eastern part where there are puna grasslands like “Pishco Huánuna" in the border with San Martin region.
  • It is warm with high atmospheric humidity and constant cloudiness in the upper parts of Cordillera El Cóndor, and in Andean terrains of the South and South-East.
  • It is warm and mild in the inter-Andean bottom of Marañón and Utcubamba.
  • It is tropical in the bed of the Valley of Marañón River and part of Utcubamba River.
